West Ranch kicker Stuart is hardly an afterthought for the Wildcats - 08/30/2010

One of the terms popularly applied to football players is “weapon.”
Running backs, wide receivers, kick returners, anyone who scores points on a regular basis.
But it’s rarely applied to kickers, especially at the high school level. Maybe that’s because great high school kickers are rare.
“Everybody wants to be that star running back,” says West Ranch kicker Brady Stuart. “I do, too. I’m not going to lie.”
But Stuart is becoming a weapon in his own right.
He made nine field goals and 23 extra points for the Wildcats in 2009. His best game came in a victory over Canyon, when he nailed three field goals, including a 42-yarder.
West Ranch head coach Sean O’Brien has so much confidence in Stuart’s ability that the threshold for field goals is the 30-yard line. That means he trusts Stuart from 47 yards away, once 10 yards are added for the end zone and seven more for the snap.

Wildcats kicker boosts national profile: Stuart ties for first at National Kicking Event in mid-January - 02/08/2010
West Ranch junior Brady Stuart may have just put himself on college football’s national radar.
One of the few pure kickers in the Foothill League, Stuart tied for first place in the kickoff portion of the eighth annual National Kicking Event for junior competitors in Las Vegas, which was held from Jan. 15-17.
For the young player with college ambitions, the performance adds credence to his growing potential.
“To win that is a big deal. To say that in my letter (to colleges) is a good thing to say,” Stuart said. “Then coming back and telling my high school coaches is a good thing because they have a bunch of confidence in me on kickoffs.”
Stuart finished with an average distance of 63 yards and average hang time of 3.66 seconds to tie James Hairston Jr. from Texas.
The competition also included field-goal kicking and punting portions, with more than 400 contestants from the United States, Canada and Australia.
Stuart trains with Chris Sailer Kicking, which has produced such talents as Arizona State’s Thomas Weber and UCLA’s Kai Forbath, winners of the last two Lou Groza awards.
The Lou Groza Award is presented to the nation’s top kicker.
Additionally, Chris Sailer Kicking has trained Dallas Cowboys kicker Nick Folk and Kansas City’s Ryan Succop, among many others.
In 2009, Stuart was named first-team All-Foothill League and second-team All-Santa Clarita Valley, and he is currently Chris Sailer’s No. 6 national recruit for the class of 2011.
He hopes to one day attend UCLA or San Diego State and has sent out letters to schools nationwide.
However, he said he would prefer to stay in California.
“Everyone bags on kickers and when I’m at practice everyone is bagging on me saying I’m not doing much,” Stuart says with a laugh. “But when you get in the game, we only get one chance. .... When you get put into the game, it is really nerve-racking. At the same time, it is one of the most awesome things to do.”

West Ranch football beats Canyon - 11/03/2009

West Ranch had seen this before.
A long drive mounted late in the game by a tradition-rich Foothill League program, a drive that would snatch victory away.
It happened the previous week against Saugus.
The Wildcats weren't about to let it happen again.
Defensive back Keever Parrish chopped down Canyon quarterback Jonathan Jerozal at the 1-yard line on fourth-and-goal with eight seconds left, and West Ranch capitalized on four Canyon turnovers to earn a 23-18 victory Friday at Valencia High School.
It marks the first win for West Ranch (5-3, 2-1) over a league school other than Golden Valley, and Wildcats head coach Sean O'Brien had trouble putting the feeling into words after the game.
